Second hand Eurostar tickets can be purchased and resold on a few web sites. I’ve used this trick several times when my travel plans had to change at the last minute. In most cases I have sold unrefundable tickets that I could not use. In a few cases I have managed to buy last minute tickets when the regular rates had become too expensive.
A few learnings here:
- It is in principle forbidden to resell Eurostar tickets. But in practice, who cares? Not even Eurostar: a ticket has been sold, a passenger will travel. I have never heard of anyone having had a problem.
- Most tickets have a personal name printed on them, so many people are afraid to reuse someone else’s ticket. In practice there is no risk and here is why – as far as the information I have gathered tells the story. There seem to be a complete split of responsibility between Eurostar and the UK/French Customs: the former is responsible for, and empowered to, validate tickets and is not allowed to perform individual identity checks. Viceversa, the Custom officers are responsible for personal identity validation, and not empowered to validate travel tickets. In a nutshell, no one will ever check if the name on ticket and name on passport are the same.
- Most sites forbid to sell a ticket at a higher price than the purchase price, most likely to avoid legal action from Eurostar. In practice, I have purchased tickets for a higher price than face value. I guess a few smart ones are making some pocket money. As far as I am concerned I have only sold my tickets at face value to avoid losses.
