Second hand Eurostar tickets can be purchased and resold on a few web sites. I’ve used this trick several times when my travel plans had to change at the last minute. In most cases I have sold unrefundable tickets that I could not use. In a few cases I have managed to buy last minute tickets when the regular rates had become too expensive.
A few learnings here:
- It is in principle forbidden to resell Eurostar tickets. But in practice, who cares? Not even Eurostar: a ticket has been sold, a passenger will travel. I have never heard of anyone having had a problem.
- Most tickets have a personal name printed on them, so many people are afraid to reuse someone else’s ticket. In practice there is no risk and here is why – as far as the information I have gathered tells the story. There seem to be a complete split of responsibility between Eurostar and the UK/French Customs: the former is responsible for, and empowered to, validate tickets and is not allowed to perform individual identity checks. Viceversa, the Custom officers are responsible for personal identity validation, and not empowered to validate travel tickets. In a nutshell, no one will ever check if the name on ticket and name on passport are the same.
- Most sites forbid to sell a ticket at a higher price than the purchase price, most likely to avoid legal action from Eurostar. In practice, I have purchased tickets for a higher price than face value. I guess a few smart ones are making some pocket money. As far as I am concerned I have only sold my tickets at face value to avoid losses.

Its a Youth with a name attached however I’ve been told this is not check and you only scan the ticket yourself. Payment can be cash at the station on day of departure as I’m still travelling myself.

Posted by Alok | May 12, 2013, 9:24 amJust an update in case anyone stumbles upon this thread and is in a similar situation; I did receive receive a mail from Eurostar that they were willing to make the changes but would charge 30 GBP per person. I had by then made another booking for the correct dates. 🙂 After calling up their support center they were willing to refund my incorrect booking but deduct 30 GBP per person and let me keep the second reservation. This worked well enough for me and consider the 150 GBP my mistake for not being vigilant of what I was booking.

For the first time, upon passing through UK border control, they also asked to see my ticket. Fortunately I had altered the name with photoshop so I had no problems.
But, what would have happened if it had had the original person’s (a girl) name on? Have they always checked tickets at UK passport control?
Also, do the classic format card tickets have a name printed on them?

thanks for sharing this. It’s the first time I hear about someone having the name checked at border control. I know it happens but it must be rare. As far as I know, classic format card tickets also have the name printed on them if they are bought via the web and mailed to you. On the other hand I have seen many tickets purchased directly at ticket desks which did not have any name on them.
What would have happened if… well, I guess you would try to explain that your friend could not make it and she gave you her tickets.

There was a news story about illegal immigrants buying a ticket at Brussels and going on to London without going through UK border checks. They don’t always do the check (which is itself a story). But all they want to see is a stamp that you got in Lille or Brussels on your Eurostar that proves that you have indeed gone through the border check abroad. They don’t give a stuff about you or me travelling on someone else’s ticket.

There is a risk, as the terms and conditions do not allow reselling tickets.
Having said that, we’ve never heard of anyone being name checked unless you try to get into the priority boarding area or lounge.
