It’s coming! It’s coming! The news is out – lots of things announced yesterday but the big one that lots of people have been expecting for a long time is finally announced: wifi onboard Eurostar trains!
As I mentioned some time ago, there is no wifi on the Eurostar yet. I mean “onboard”, as there is free wifi in the London St Pancras lounge as well as paid wifi in the Paris lounge.
It isn’t really clear when the new trains would hit the rails. The statement says “2011”, but it also refers to a refurbishing program for the current coaches. Several months ago the new Eurostar design from Pininfarina was announced for 2012, so it looks like we might get wifi earlier than expected on some trains.
How is the onboard wifi going to be priced? No details have been announced but it’s likely that the scheme will be similar to the one on Thalys: free wifi for upper class (Comfort 1) and 1-hour or 1-day access fees for the rest.
